Reflexologists believe there are fifty points in the feet that can be used to alleviate health problems in the body. These reflexology points correspond to other parts of the body, which are affected by placing pressure on specific points in the feet. All parts of the foot are massaged in order to treat the whole body. The theory of reflexology is that points on the left foot correspond to points on the right side of the body and vice versa.

Reflexologists believe waste matter concentrates around the specific points in the form of uric acid and calcium. They apply pressure to the reflexology points to open blocked nerve pathways and help flush away any toxins. States of mind are also said to be represented by reflexology points and practitioners claim that more than one hundred ailments can benefit from this form of treatment.

In a reflexology treatment, the practitioner stimulates the reflex points of the feet checking for pain or tenderness. The greater the pain, the more imbalance exists. Gentle thumb walking from one reflex point to another helps relieve the pain and tenderness. A treatment usually lasts about an hour, but more than one treatment is often needed depending on the problem.

Some of the problems reflexology points have been used to treat are headache, sinus problems, ear and eye problems, gall bladder and ulcer problems, hip and lower back problems as well as gynecological problems.
