Website Purpose

It all starts with marketing and research: who are your target audience, what keywords will they be searching on, what content can you offer of benefit to them and what action do you wish them to take?

Preliminaries

The following can be used as a questionnaire or as the framework for an initial discussion (free of charge).

  1. What is the business purpose of the website?
  2. Who is the intended target audience?
  3. What are they looking for from your site?
  4. What action do you want your target site visitors to take: email? response form? telephone?
  5. Do you want to take orders and payment on-line?
  6. What keywords will the site be based on, ie what will your target visitors (=potential customers) enter into Google to find you?
  7. What is your geographical catchment area?

Generic Website Options

There are several generic types of website, and we can advise what might be the most suitable for you based on indications such as:

Option A - One Page Website

Typically this is supplementing a brochure, and replacing Yellow Pages. It enables enquirers to find your business and then phone of email for further information.

Option C - Content Management System

Content Management Systems (CMSs) are based on a database and templates, which do a lot of work for you and provide a solid platform with a professional look and feel. They save time and money in the medium and long term, but do have a learning curve.

The leading open source systems, such as Drupal and Joomla, have thousands of third party extensions available, supporting almost any size and type of website.

A CMS should be at least considered if one or more of the following apply:

  1. Do you want to be able to create and edit content yourself?
  2. Will there be multiple authors?
  3. Do you need to register users?
  4. Do you need a photo gallery, sound or video?
  5. Do you need an interactive site,with blog like articles and comments?
  6. Do you need support for multiple news articles?
  7. Do you need a discussion forum?
  8. Do you need to support, categorise, sort and search a lot of content?
